SSPC power consumption - [Wickway] - power consumption reduced by 67%

Reduce wiring

For aircraft or ground vehicles, if load switching is performed using circuit breakers that are accessible to the crew, these circuit breakers must be located near the pilot or operator. This will force all power lines to travel back and forth to the location of the crew members. Due to the fact that SSPCs can be controlled through a network, they do not require personnel to travel back and forth on power lines, thereby reducing weight and fuel consumption.

Compared to circuit breakers, SSPC has a lower thermal profile. This is based on the low on resistance of switch MOSFETs, which can be further reduced by connecting multiple MOSFETs and/or SSPC channels in parallel to switch the current to the same load. In addition, solid-state switches eliminate power losses in relay coils, solenoids, bimetallic plates, as well as contact resistance in circuit breakers and relays. As a result, SSPC has significant advantages in internal power consumption compared to circuit breakers and relays.

For example, consider a 28V, 25A SSPC channel relative to a circuit breaker/relay combination. In each case, it is assumed that the channel is fully loaded.

Referring to Tables 1 and 2, the average power consumption of the 28V, 25 ampere relay+circuit breaker channel is 5.6+2.6=8.2 watts. For a typical 28V, 25A SSPC channel with a voltage drop of 115 mV, the power consumption generated is 2.875 watts. In addition, it is important to note that SSPC path loss includes RP-2600 PC board routing and connector contacts, while circuit breakers and relays are not included.
