Russia showcases the ability of the Orion drone to attack aerial targets

According to airrecognition website on December 21, 2021, the Russian Ministry of Defense has released a video demonstrating the ability of Orion's long-range reconnaissance/attack drones to attack aerial targets.

The Orion drone, developed by the Russian Kronstadt group, can conduct dozens of hours of aerial reconnaissance and strike targets. The aircraft can fly at an altitude of 7500 meters for 24 hours with a range of 250 kilometers.

The Orion drone has a wing length of 16 meters and a V-shaped tail, with a maximum takeoff weight of 1200 kilograms. The fuselage is made of carbon plastic composite material and uses vacuum infusion technology to significantly reduce weight. The machine is equipped with an electric pulse anti icing system, which can operate in low temperature environments.

The Orion drone is equipped with an Etran APD-115T piston engine at the tail, which is speculated to have performance comparable to the Austrian ROTAX 914 engine installed on the US heavy Predator drone.

The propeller blades of the aircraft are AV-115 adjustable pitch propellers designed by Russian company Aerosila, and the communication system is designed by Luch Bureau. It can carry a maximum cargo/weapon load of 200 kilograms.

In addition, the machine can be equipped with a multi-channel MOES stable electronic monitoring system designed by a precision instrument manufacturing system company, which can be used for detecting and tracking targets around the clock and guiding weapon systems. In addition, the aircraft can be equipped with various sensors such as radar, imaging, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare, which are installed in the lower central compartment of the fuselage.
